Since we can listen to the voices of the past and present any time we like, people make these remarks like "best singer ever" etc. I must confess that I often like the not so famous over the famous. Good exemples for me are Fischer-Dieskau and Scharzkopf. Both never gave me
shivers: but who cares. Why do I write and do you read this anyway? Die holde Kunst is waiting for us.

I too feel that DFD is a bit overrated. It's not that he isn't technically excellent (he is), but I rarely feel moved or inspired by vids of his performances. Part of it might just be
that this was during a much different time. Being "expressive" or "emotive" by today's standards may not have been even conceptualized back then.

I grew up with this music, as my mother, a Prussian forester's daughter, was a devoted
fan of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. As a result, the Romantic period in the music and poetry of my native land is close to my heart, and the sound of DFD's voice as familiar as that of an uncle. Long may this fine musician and his soulful baritone be remembered, and heard, and serve as an inspirati
on to younger baritones. R.I.P.

My favorite baritone of all time. Although I am sad that he is no longer with us, I'm happy that he lived a good long life and left behind many recordings that IMHO are the gold standards for any lieder. What I wouldn't give to have an ounce of his natural technique and interpretative powers. Whenever I need to learn a German role or a lied, I always listen to his version
first and learn something new each time.
