I've been studying music theory

At the risk of sounding a bit like Grandpa Simpson, why do so many indie/alt-rock bands at the moment sound so lame compared to stuff from nearly 20 years ago? Smashing Pumpkins, Screaming Trees, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney etc. - do My Chemical Romance (who I actually quite like), 30 Seconds From
 Mars, Avenged Sevenfold, and more, really compare to 1990, 'the year punk broke'? Maybe I'm just getting old...! (Anyone who wants to insult me for being old, I accept your comments...!)

Ah, I see. To be fair, my dad raised me on good old rock 'n'
 roll. I mean, my favourite band is Soundgarden and I listen to stuff as old as Pink Floyd and The Doors. I understand you when you say modern music isn't as good, especially the current mainstream scene, I just enjoy a lot of recent music too (e.g. Avenged Sevenfold, The White Stripes). :P
